Weekly Update (August 29, 2015) Plus Baby!

Ok, so once again a weekly update covers more than the last week.  But this time I had a good excuse for being late.  On Tuesday night Nicoleen gave birth to our 5th child, Leonie, a happy baby girl!  Good news for the family, but ouch! the gas savings really suffered this week as we didn’t have time to use our $25 Tuesday coupon while getting gas on the way to the hospital.  Oh well, you win some; you lose some.  And this time we won big with a good delivery, healthy mom, and cute baby girl!

Baby Leonie, born August 25th, weighing in at 6 lb. 14 oz., and with a length of 20.5"

As it stands, I saved $9.55 in gas in the past week and a half.  On Sunday I overcame a huge test of my will power.  I was able to resist buying any free Menards stuff even though there was a major haul opportunity.  Three separate flyers listed free-after-rebate items at Menards, 2 of which are still active as of this writing:
menards-tempt0
menards-tempt2
menards-tempt1
There are also several new ads starting tomorrow with free-after-rebate (FAR) items including: hats & t-shirts, cleaning supplies, coffee scoops, picture hanging kits, stick lighters, and American flagsThis late summer rally has disproved my hypothesis that FAR items are slowing down in Menards’ marketing strategy.  Of course you can always stay on top of current Menards ad flyers at their website.

It’s the spreadsheet-updating part of the month for me, and here’s our points and miles report:

  • Redeemed 5,000 Wells Fargo Rewards for $50 cash
  • earned 680 airline miles
  • earned 3,040 hotel points
  • earned 1,953 Chase Ultimate Rewards

Credit Card News
We’re in sort of a stagnation period as far as cards go. It’s been a challenge deciding which card to use for what. I will almost certainly cancel my Wells Fargo Propel in October and I currently have 1300 or so Wells Fargo Reward points accumulated. The lowest redemption level for cash is $25 for 2500 points. So, do I put $600 in gas (2x points on gas station purchases = 1200 pts) on that card just for a $25 redemption? It doesn’t seem like a good deal, and it isn’t, but I also really hate having effectively unusable points balances just hanging there. The other option is to redeem points for mp3s at about 150 pts per download.

I got a targeted offer yesterday for the 50,000 mile Chase Southwest personal card, which I will likely not apply for at this time.

Nicoleen got a great offer in the mail a few days ago for her Barclay Aviator card which earns American Airlines miles. If she spends at least $500 in each month of September, October, and November, she’ll get an additional 15,000 bonus miles! That’s a deal we’ll definitely make sure we take advantage of.

Travel News
I have nothing on the books, and that’s very sad. I have a free weekend night certificate good at 99% of all Hilton properties in the world that expires December 20th. I was going to go with a friend for a sweet 36 hour mini-vacation to Chicago to stay at the $400+/night Waldorf Astoria but we’re still working out the details. If that doesn’t happen I’ll probably be taking a segment of my family to the Embassy Suites in St. Paul for a random weekend night. It’s not the Waldorf, but at least I’d be able to drink away my sorrow at not getting a more valuable certificate redemption at the Embassy Suites’ complimentary cocktail hour.

Weekly Review (August 17, 2015)

and ………………….. we’re back!

I’m sure you’re all clamoring for an explanation of why the site was down for several days, followed by a weird message about the account being suspended, followed by a three month old version of the site, and now finally the entire up-to-date site being back online.  Well, you’re not going to get that explanation.  Now the complete one, anyway.  Suffice it to say the server I had been using was suddenly unavailable to me, including my online back-ups of the site.

I had a hard drive back-up, but it was outdated (hence the few days where May 11th was the most recent post).  After scrambling to find a new host, I began piecing together the new content from my draft copies of the articles.  It was slow and imperfect.  But then ValueTactics reader Licher turned me on to google’s cached pages, which contained everything I needed to complete the restoration with high fidelity.

🙂 Thanks, Licher! 🙂

Now on to the [now bi-]weekly review:  In the last two weeks I got $13.76 in free gas.  The nominal gas price is creeping up again, so my percentage of free gas will likely soon fall from its 18% average.  To find out how I get free gas every time I fill up, check out the free gas tactic.

Other News
Some news only ever so tenuously related to the site is that I completed moving my home office (or “junk room” as my wife lovingly refers to it) to make room for our upcoming family addition.  This was the same clean-out project during which I noticed my pile of card activation stickers.  Going through some old stacks of paperwork I also found something very interesting.  It was a series of letters leading up to (and including) the cancellation of a credit card I had back in 2003-2004.  The reason?  Delinquent on payments :-/  That’s right.  I broke every rule back then and apparently had a credit card account closed on me.  I was completely irresponsible a decade ago, but now I manage to keep track of ~20 credit card accounts and a dozen points programs.  Take this as proof that you can become organized if you really decide to!

Weekly Review (August 3, 2015)

(This is a data recovered post, originally published on August 3rd, 2015.)

In the past week I’ve used free gas tactics to get $28.71 worth of commuting fuel. My 2015 free gas percentage is still hovering just over 18% of total gas purchased.

Although I’m officially done buying all free-after-rebate Menards items, I still keep tabs on the sales. There was a new sale ad starting yesterday, but not a single free-after-rebate item was listed.

Weekly Review (July 29, 2015)

(This is a data recovered post, originally published on July 29th, 2015.)

Travel News
We’ve been home from our vacation for over a week now, so I’ve run out of excuses for why I haven’t done an update.  The big news, of course, is that the trip was awesome!  We spent 12 days traveling through Switzerland, Italy, Germany, and Holland.10 year euro
There is so much to write about regarding this trip I don’t even know where to start.  Many of you have been asking for more details about how we traveled first class and stayed at luxury hotels for next to nothing.  I’m currently working on a overview of how we did it, and more importantly how you can do it too!  That post will be up in the next few days.  Also look for a full review of each part of the trip in the coming weeks.

As for our first week back, I pumped $12.53 in free gas using the free gas tactics outlined on this site.  I mentioned in this previous update that the Menards free stuff experiment is over but on Sunday I stopped by and couldn’t resist getting some of the free deals.  10 4-packs of rechargeable batteries and a stainless steel yardstick were the highlights.

Last week I did my monthly spreadsheet update.  Here are the relevant points and miles data:

  • Used a free weekend night certificate at Hilton (~$250 value)
  • earned 51,112 airline miles
  • earned 182 hotel points
  • earned 5972 Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • earned 1431 “other” points (Wells Fargo Rewards, Barclay Arrival Miles, Citi Cash)
  • avoided $145.51 in interest charges

Weekly Review (July 6, 2015)

(This is a data recovered post, originally published on July 7th, 2015.)

This review actually covers a two week period, and there won’t be another one until the end of the month.  Nicoleen and I left for our anniversary trip this morning so I won’t have the usual activity to report for the next two weeks.

I cashed in another 8750 My SA Rewards points last Tuesday and got the $25 free gas coupon. That marks the halfway point in 2015, and so far I’ve pumped $333.47 in free gas!  That puts me on track to almost $700 in free gas this year.  To date 18.05% of my commuting gas has been free.

Big Menards News
When I started my experiment with free stuff from Menards, I wanted to know how much stuff I could get if I maxed the quantity of every item that was free after rebate. I have run the experiment for 2 years and as of Sunday, it’s over. That’s right, I’m all done getting every free with rebate item every week from Menards. But that doesn’t mean I’m done with Menards free stuff. It just means the experiment is done. Now it’s time to analyze the data 🙂

This last Sunday there were about 7 concurrently running sale ads. Here’s what I ended up with for my last official Menards haul:
menards final haul redo

  • 4x  heavy duty sponge
  • 2x  car visor tissue holder
  • 4x  2″ angle paint brush
  • 2x  23×42″ vinyl miniblinds
  • 4x  hose sprayer nozzle
  • 2x  Menards baseball hat
  • 2x  Menards t-shirt
  • 2x  6″ putty knife

This last haul with a retail value of $104.94 brings the 2-year total to over $5000!

Apparently Delta is once again sending targeted offers for the 50k bonus on the Amex Delta Gold card.  The public offers for the United MileagePlus Explorer and the Citi AAdvantage card are both down below 40k once again.

I was once again impressed by Chase customer service on Wednesday.  I called to ask for replacements for my old chip-less Sapphire Preferred.  The new cards come with chip and signature technology, which is required for most merchants in Europe.  I was instantly connected to a native English speaker and the whole conversation took about 45 seconds.  23 hours later a UPS overnight package arrived at my door with the two new cards!

Weekly Review (June 22, 2015)

(This is a data recovered post, originally published on June 22nd, 2015.)

I just finished tallying our monthly credit card stats tonight.  I got my bonus from my Chase IHG card, which helped the hotel points category quite a bit.  Two new Menards flyers started over the weekend but neither had any free-with-rebate items.  Are they slowing down the rebate program?  I cashed in 8750 My SA Rewards points on Tuesday and got the $25 free gas coupon.  My total free gas for the week was $30.25.

As I said, here’s the June report on our points and miles:

  • redeemed no points or miles
  • earned 321 airline miles
  • earned 70,926 hotel points
  • earned 2,773 Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • earned 2,345 “other” points (Wells Fargo Rewards, Barclay Arrival Miles, Citi Cash)
  • avoided $118.03 in interest charges

I can also now announce the Flea Market profits.  I made $201.81 on Menards stuff alone, and an additional $35.36 on giant soccer balls (I’m seller GreatWhiteNorth), plus $11.63 on miscellaneous stuff I was selling.  The full review of the event is still in process.

Weekly Review (June 16, 2015)

(This is a data recovered post, originally published on June 17th, 2015.)

It was a dinky week on the free gas front.  I somehow missed double coupon day (Tuesdays) and instead filled up on Monday and Wednesday.  Total weekly free gas was only $2.52.

Menards was a little better.  I managed to pick up $51.52 in free stuff between locking storage jars (8 each of three different sizes) and unadvertised tablet pads.

Of course the big news this week was that over the weekend I set up at Wright County Swapper’s Meet and sold a bunch of stuff!  I will soon do a full review of the flea market and what it means for my eventual Menards free stuff long-term tactical analysis.

Weekly Review (Monthly Version 2)

(This is a data recovered post, originally published on June 8th, 2015.)

Would you look at that!  This update conveniently covers the period from May 8th to June 8th, making this the second monthly “weekly” update in a row.  Yes, life continues to be extremely busy, and this website is definitely a part-time endeavor for me.  Let’s get on with the update:

As far as free gas goes, I only had $38.53 in the past 4 weeks.  (This is really only 3 weeks worth since I spent the past week in one location and hence there were no commute miles).

On the Menards front there is a new round of sales up and running.  The Crazy Days 3 day sale was this last weekend, but I could only get to the store on the 3rd day (Sunday) so one item was sold out (mosquito repellant spray).  I had planned on setting up at a large nearby flea market 2 weekends ago, but the weather didn’t cooperate.  I also found out that I had way more stuff than I thought, so getting it all packed up was a chore, as will be setting it all up to sell.  I’ve been collecting free stuff from Menards for almost 2 years and it completely fills up my dad’s Chevy Tahoe and a 4×8′ trailer about 3 feet high!  I can’t tie up these vehicles any longer, so the flea market will probably be a “go” this Saturday, despite the questionable weather forecast as of the time of this writing.  If you want to check out my stuff, I’ll be at Wright County Swapper’s Meet in South Haven, MN this Saturday!

Website Update
Despite the last of recent posts, I have been doing a lot of writing about free travel and related value tactics.  Posts in the hopper include a review and cost-breakdown of my first ever points-redemption trip last summer; the long-awaited review of Nicoleen’s and my Jamaican vacation this winter; and a posts related to other value tactics and strategies.

Travel News
June is here already.  It’s travel season!  I have an annual weekend camping trip planned at the end of this month, and less than 2 weeks into July is our 10 year anniversary trip!  Details of that trip will be revealed shortly.  In the meantime, like ValueTactics on Facebook and follow us @ValueTactics so you can keep up to date!

Credit Card News
There are so many good card offers right now I can’t even keep track of them all.  This is partially due to the fact that I’m avoiding acquiring new cards for the time being as we may be applying for a new mortgage within the next year.  Not being able to apply for new cards makes Ross unhappy, and he starts writing in 3rd person.

If you want to know the biggest news, however, it’s probably the arrival of theCiti Thank You Premier card, which has an awesome sign up bonus and really great daily spend category bonuses.  Check out frugaltravelguy’s review here.

I have new referral links for the always-good Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Chase Ink Plus, the business version with additional benefits (including 5x points on telephone and internet bills and purchases from office supply stores).  Send me an e-mail if you’re considering one of these cards and I’ll e-mail you a link so I get some referral points.  It’s a win-win!
