Bi-Weekly Update (June 27, 2016)

In this update: our points and miles totals for May, a review of recent ValueTactics posts, a report of recent vacation activity, and a look forward to upcoming free vacation action!

With my vastly lowered commuting mileage I’ve not been saving as much on gas lately, although the percentage savings tends to hover around the 17-18% mark, just like when I was driving 180 miles a day.  I’ve decided to start tracking all my gas savings; not just commute mileage.  In May I pumped 14.86 in free gas.

With one bonus from our last round of card apps hitting in May, we had a pretty good month in the points and miles department!

  • earned 87,680 hotel points
  • earned 3,094 ‘other’ points
  • earned 901 Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • transferred 1,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards to United miles to restart the expiration timer

Two weeks ago the family and I (minus the baby) took our first real summer vacation together . . . with the aid of some points programs of course!  Our destination was the Black Hills of South Dakota where we stayed one night in a hotel and 3 nights camping.  We saw a selection of all the major sights in the area, and we learned a fair bit about traveling with small kids.  Stay tuned to ValueTactics.com and the ValueTactics Facebook page for a full report of the trip, including cost breakdown and a hotel review.

Weekly Update (May 12th, 2016)

On tap for this update: status of my current bonus spending, a ValueTactics format change, our personal April totals, new blog post review, and updated travel plans.

Our Bonus Spending Progress
In April we got three new cards. We have completed the $1k spend on the Amex Hilton HHonors card, thereby earning the 75,000 point bonus. We are still working on the $3k spend requirement for the 80,000 point bonus on the Chase Marriott Rewards Premier card. We’re also still working on the hefty $4.5k spend requirement for the $400 cash bonus on the Capital One Spark Cash for Business card.

Website News
Any regular reader of this site knows that I’m not the best at getting my regular weekly updates posted in a timely fashion. This site is purely a hobby for me and my day job and family commitments have to come first. Many times I go two weeks or more without a publishing a single post. To put the expectation more in line with reality, I am turning “weekly update” into “bi-weekly update.” It’s my hope that this realistic target will help me to update the site more frequently by preventing the writers’ block that occurs when one falls behind schedule.

We are now less than a month away from our family vacation to the Black Hills of South Dakota! We are using IHG points for a hotel room in Rapid City and we’ll be camping for the following few days. You can bet we’ll be racking up My SA Rewards points toward free gas along the way!

  • earned 229 airline miles
  • 9 “other” points expired ($0.09 worth of ‘orphan’ points)
  • earned 443 Citi Thank-You points

Weekly Update (April 7th, 2016)

Lots to talk about this week!  A Menards relapse, card cancellations, card applications, Alaska Airlines surprise mile devaluation, more cracks in the system, bonus points offers, and a website update…

General Card News
Alaska Airlines made an unannounced, overnight devaluation of their miles program.  Specifically, they doubled the miles required for Emirates first class bookings.  Now if you’re wondering why such a specific devaluation is making some people mad, look at what you used to be able to get for 100k miles (now 200k):

The first class bar on Emirates A380

For more pics of Emirates A380 first class, click here

The salt in the wound was that the surprise move was executed during a “buy miles” promotion.  Some people had undoubtedly just purchased miles, planning to use them on one of these flights, only to find out they now had half the miles they needed.  Because of the social media outrage, Alaska Airlines backed off a bit and is now allowing refunds on purchased miles in some cases.  For the whole story, read Milevalue’s post.

Cracks in the system?
Points and miles devaluations are to be expected.  Stricter account approval measures are to be expected.  New limitations on point usage are to be expected.  I don’t freak out about such things, but some people do.  Every so often, some blogger or Flyertalk poster will spout off about the “demise of travel hacking” or some such.  While I agree the party won’t last forever, I don’t think it will come crumbling to the ground all at once.  Programs change and get tighter.  To respond, the tactic should be to plan more carefully, diversify your points and miles portfolio, and most importantly GET IN THE GAME!

If you’ve been sitting on the sidelines, thinking you want to get a card or two and do some free luxury traveling, don’t delay.  Of course you have to be in a good position to take on more personal credit, and you have to be able to compose yourself and not be foolish.  But if you are in a good place to take advantage of the credit cards/points and mile tactics and have been procrastinating, let these wake-up calls be your motivation to get in the game!

If you need help figuring out where to start, read my post titled Which Card Should I Get?

Personal Card News
In my last post I outlined my new card applications.  The only other personal news I have is that I cancelled my American Airlines card from CitiBusiness.  The annual fee was due soon and I simply couldn’t find enough value in keeping the card.

I did, however, pay the annual fee on my Chase IHG card.  For the $49 annual fee, I get a free night at any IHG property.  This is potentially worth $300+ in value but for a simple example, I looked at booking the highest category IHG hotel in Minneapolis for New Year’s Eve.  The cash price (with taxes) would be $255.67.  Not a bad deal for paying the $49 annual fee.

Menards Free Stuff Relapse
“Oh no!  He’s off the wagon!”  Now now…don’t be alarmed.  It was just one free-after-rebate shopping trip.  🙂  I was in Menards a couple weeks ago to buy some home repair supplies and I saw a few good FAR deals, so I bought them:

As I articulated at the end of my Menards Free Stuff – The Verdict post, I’m done getting the max quantity of every FAR item.  But these few items I recently bought were either known good-sellers, or useful for my own household.  So I bought them.  Don’t worry, Nicoleen, we’re not going back to these days:

Personal Points and Miles Update for March
Last but not least, here are our totals for March, which ends my recent era of ValueTactics laziness and catches the site up to date!

  • earned 60 airline miles
  • earned 2,527 hotel points
  • earned 1,326 Thank-You points
  • earned 3,487 Chase Ultimate Rewards

I also redeemed 8,750 My SA Rewards points for $25 in free gas at Super America.  In March I pumped 52.56 in free gas!

Playing Catch-Up (February 2016)

As I continue playing catch-up I want to get up to date in my personal points and miles earning reporting.  In the last update I listed the points and miles traffic in Nicoleen’s and my accounts for January.  Here are our totals for February:

  • earned 5,265 airline miles
  • earned 177 hotel points
  • earned 2,000 “other” points
  • earned 14,675 Citi Thank-You points
  • earned 1,886 Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • redeemed 35,000 IHG hotel points for a two bed suite for an upcoming trip

In February I saved $17.27 by using free gas tactics.

Website Update
I have had several requests for a “beginner’s guide” type page; a web page where you can send your friends who have heard you talking about value tactics and want to know more.  Well, that was kind of the purpose of this entire site.  However, I understand that we live in a tl;dr world, so I will do my best to write up some sort of beginner’s guide or brief summary of the tactics presented on this site.

Travel News
We have a family road trip to South Dakota planned in June.  We’ll primarily be camping but to keep things simple we wanted to stay in a hotel in Rapid City the first night.  Few hotels have rooms that can accommodate our family of 6 (the baby’s staying with Grandma) but I found a two bed suite at the Holiday Inn – Rushmore Plaza.
playing catch-up http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/hotelmedia/repository/vfmleonardo/galleries/prod/media/medlib/imageRepo/2/0/72/884/363/RAPCC_3790688611_R.jpg
IHG points can be used for all chains in the Intercontinental Hotel Group.  The standard rooms at the Holiday Inn were 25,000 and the suite was 35,000.  The cash price at the time of booking was $214.66 including taxes and fees.  That makes a point value of about 0.61 cents.  Not great but not horrible as far as hotel points go.  Hilton points end up weighing in around 0.3 cents each.  Considering my IHG card came with an 80,000 point bonus, this redemption example points toward the card being worth about $490.

My next catch-up update will summarize March and get us back up to date!  Stay tuned…

Playing Catch-Up (January 2016)

It’s been another long stretch of time between posts and I am sorry for that.  I’m still cruising along, working my day job and managing a household with my wife, 5 kids, and a dog.  There hasn’t been much personal news for my on the credit card front but I continue to accumulate points and miles!

I know this is pretty late, but here’s the summary of our personal points and miles earning for January:

  • earned 15,541 airline miles
  • earned 1,095 hotel points
  • earned 52,788 Citi Thank-You points
  • earned 898 Chase Ultimate Rewards

Free Gas News
It’s been a slow start to the year for me in terms of free gas.  I started the year with almost no points built up and the low gas prices have meant slow point accumulation (actually a good thing for gas expense, but not as fun!)  In January I got $30.00 free gas by using free gas tactics.

Starting next week, I will have a new position at work which will reduce my commute to 25% of my current 160 daily miles!  This will drastically reduce the numbers in my free gas report, but it will also drastically reduce my total expense in that regard, so it’s a good thing.

Travel News
Nicoleen and I are excited about our Hawaii trip in September!  Because we’ll be arriving in the evening, we wanted to find a cheap hotel near the airport to spend our first night.  That way, we can maximize the time spent at the Hyatt Andaz, which we’ll be staying at the next 4 nights.  I took advantage of this e-mail offer I got to book the 1 night:
rocketmiles
4000 free AAdvantage miles for clicking a few buttons and signing up for the Rocketmiles account!  Now that our “extra” night is booked, the last piece of the planning puzzle will be to get a rental car lined up.

Weekly Update (2015 Final)

Wow, it’s been a while since my last post.  Don’t worry; I’m still around!  I’ve been busy and have had a bit of writer’s block.  I’ll post an updated update soon, but in the meantime, here is the half-baked post that’s been sitting in draft form for almost a month and a half! . . .

This update covers the second half of December.  The year ended with a gas discount rally, as I used my SA Rewards to buy 2 of the big $25 coupons.  I ended up with $56.80 in free gas in the last 2 1/2 weeks!  I’ll give a full run down of the 2015 totals in the next update but here’s a hint: I exceeded my $600 goal!

On Christmas night I did our monthly credit card and points spreadsheet update.  Here’s what the previous month of points earning got us:

  • earned 483 airline miles
  • earned 11,758 hotel points
  • earned 973 Citi Thank-You points
  • earned 591 Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • redeemed 6 hotel nights ($2,610.12 value) with free night certificates
  • used 90,000 Delta SkyMiles for 2 RT flights to Hawaii (MSP-OGG)

Weekly Update (December 14th, 2015)

Sorry about the radio silence, folks.  I’ve been doing a lot with value tactics but just haven’t taken the time to write about it.  It’s been three weeks since my last update, so here’s a summary of what using value tactics can do for you in less than a month:

  • Used a Hilton free night certificate at the Embassy Suites in St. Paul
  • Booked flights to Hawaii for my Nicoleen and I for $22.40
  • Booked $2,610.11 worth of hotel stays in Hawaii for $0.00, using more free night certificates
  • Saved $17.07 in gas by using free gas tactics

United Club passes up for grabs!
I have 2 free passes to use at any United Club airport lounge that are expiring on December 1st.  I’m giving these away to anyone who can use them in exchange for taking a few pictures and reporting back on your impressions of the lounge.  Read this facebook post for more info, and to check if they have been spoken for.

Credit Card News
Personal Card News:
I recently cancelled my Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve card.  Ever since Hilton’s massive points devaluation of 2013 it’s my opinion that Hilton HHonors points are not even worth pursuing.  If you happen to collect them here or there, fine.  But paying the $95 annual fee to keep the points-earning card isn’t worth it to me.  (I paid the up-front $95 annual fee for the first year when I got the card – the two free nights I redeemed from the sign-up bonus were worth over $500, so my experience with this card was valuable as a whole.)

cancel
I also cancelled my Wells Fargo Propel to avoid paying the $175 annual fee.  This was the easiest call to cancel a card I have ever made!  The customer service rep agreed the annual fee was way too high, proactively notified me that the fee would be removed within a few days, told me how much interest was daily accruing on my remaining balance, and never once try to convince me to keep the card.  The whole call took about 3 minutes.

We have hit the bonus spending requirements on all three hotel cards we recently acquired.  For the last one I bought a couple hundred dollars of gift cards to our usual grocery store and local gas station.  This wasn’t to sneak in the spend before the required deadline, but rather to get my two free nights ASAP, since they were the last two pieces in the puzzle for our upcoming Hawaii trip.

General Card News:
There is no earth shattering news on the credit card front.  My current recommendation for most people just starting out or who want a single, versatile card is still the Chase Sapphire Preferred.  The bonus for this card recently jumped from 40,000 Ultimate Rewards to 50,000.  This could have been in response to the waning draw of this card due to Chase’s new account approval process and the rise of competitors like the Citi Thank-You Premier.  Look for an upcoming post outlining why beginning with Chase cards is now key to any points and miles strategy.

embassy suitesLast weekend Nicoleen and I took our two oldest kids to the Embassy Suites in St. Paul.  The impetus for this this micro-vacation was to use an expiring free night certificate at a Hilton property.  The hotel comes with a few nice perks like a nightly manager’s reception and complimentary full breakfast buffet.  It was a nice little get-away and the price was right!

Hawaii here we come!  It’s official: we used a combination of Hyatt free night certificates, Hilton free weekend night certificates, and Delta Skymiles to book a nearly free trip to Hawaii for next September.  Neither of us have been there and it’s been on my bucket list since I was a kid.  We are excited 🙂

Weekly Update (November 24, 2015)

I had back surgery yesterday to fix a herniated disc.  That’s my excuse for the lack of any work on the site or social media this last week.  Anything physical I wanted to get done for the next several months had to be finished before yesterday.  The surgery went well and now I’m on to the lengthy recovery process as I get back to normal.  I don’t want any pity so I won’t post the obligatory hospital gown/bed picture.  Instead, take a look at this hospital meal I custom ordered!

After not eating for 21 hours, this hospital food was better than any first class airplane meal or fancy airport lounge fare!

After not eating for 21 hours, this hospital food was better than any first class airplane meal or fancy airport lounge fare!

It was typical busy valuetactics week in our household.  Here are the highlights: With some limited commuting this week I only saved $5.43 using the free gas tactic.  That brings the running total for 2015 to $540, with the overall discount hovering around 17% for all my commuting gas needs.

hyatt splash pageWhen we applied online for our Chase Hyatt cards a few weeks ago, I used an application link I found on the flyertalk wiki page for this card. There weren’t many reports of the direct link working. Instead, people had been getting this offer by starting to book a room and having the offer ad displayed for them. I couldn’t get that ad to display, so I clicked the direct link from the wiki. The offer was identical to the standard offer (two free night certificates for meeting a $1k spend in 3 months, plus 5,000 Hyatt Gold Passport reward points for adding an authorized user to the account) except that this offer also included a $50 statement credit.
When doing my monthly updates this week I discovered the $50 statement credits had posted to our accounts!  A free $100 for 5 minutes of research and clicking on the right application link!

Here’s our monthly points earned and redemption totals:

  • earned 2,210 airline miles
  • earned 9,056 hotel points
  • earned 1,712 Citi Thank-You points
  • earned 589 Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • Received $100 in statement credits on our Chase Hyatt cards
  • Received a $10 Southwest Airlines gift card via the Wells Fargo Propel airline benefit

Credit Card News
The sign-up bonus on the Chase Sapphire preferred has been jacked up to 50,000 Ultimate Rewards points.  By hitting the minimum spend (4k pts) and adding an authorized user (5k pts), you’ll have 59,000 Ultimate Rewards points!  Another $1k in spending or by making some of your bonus spend in 2x pioints categories, you’ll easily have 60,000 UR points! That’s enough for a free round trip flight to Europe in peak season if you transfer them to United miles, for example.  In the next few days I’ll be writing a post to outline why getting this card is a wise choice for several reasons.  Or if you’d like to apply right now, please use my referral link. (disclaimer: I earn bonus points when you click, but the offer is the same as the best public offer available.)
